  • Electric Car: Saab 9-3 ePower Drive Test in Paris

Most of what we read so far about electric cars is that on the plus side can count high environmental benefits and a relatively quiet, comfortable rampage. But on the minus side, we find serious disadvantages hefty price tag, poor performance, high weight and limited range. Suddenly the electric car does not appear as attractive anymore.

But Uppsala company Electroengine is about to change the negative perception. In the summer of 2009 shook the man of greatly when a prototype electric car was presented, based on the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible. The weight is the same as that of an ordinary 9-3 despite a battery pack that provides a range of less than 30 mil. With dual motors and a combined peak power of 335 hp makes the car from 0-100 km / h in just 6.3 seconds.

The secret behind the good performance data is a new, unique type of battery management. The weight can be reduced, the cooling becomes easier and it can also be relatively easy to replace individual cells in battery pack – instead of having to assemble an entirely new package. With the kind of three-phase 32-amp outlet that we described in this article – click here to link – the battery can be charged to 20-mile distance in one hour. This battery technology forms the basis for the test series of 70 electric cars that Saab will build and test in the coming year.

It all sounded too good to be true, we at the editorial office wrote down our questions and sent the chief Alright Söderlind to Uppsala. You can read the full article on Electroengine and their electrified Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible by clicking on this link. • First Debut Saab 9-3 ePower in Paris Auto Show

Saab Automobile is working with electric cars is no secret and in Paris, when the great autumn salon opens to the public in early October, you should show the progress made. On the stand, then, “the 9-3 ePower”, the first electric car that will soon roll out on Swedish roads in 70 specimens to be tested in reality.

Saab electric car “9-3 ePower” is the result of collaboration between Saab Automobile, Boston Power (battery), Electroengine in Sweden AB (electric motors), Innovatum (project management) and Power Circle (Association of Swedish electricity and electric power engineering). The electric motor provides 184 hp and is working through a continuously variable transmission. Since electric motors provide full torque at “idle” is a good performance, in this case accelerates a 9-3 0-100 km / h in just 8.5 seconds. Top speed down to 150 km / h.

All auxiliary systems and other functions in the car is electric, which means that, for example, air conditioning, electrical, and power steering. The battery pack supplies 12V power to the lighting via a separate 12V battery and capacity of 35.5 kWh said enough to 20 miles of driving, at best. The battery pack is tested down to minus 30 degrees, which is at least ten degrees lower than the second (equivalent) electric cars tested at. The battery pack is air cooled, which reduces costs, and life expectancy is estimated at least ten years.

Upload time depends of course on the current and voltage, but according to the press release, it goes relatively quickly even in a standard wall outlet. The press release says this: “Depending on the discharge level, it can be recharged fully in three to six hours through a normal household outlet.”
One of our knowledgeable readers, signature “Jock”, includes the commentator field below have developed the calculator, and notes that it probably has to be a trefastuttag is meant by “ordinary household outlet.” Jock writes:
“3x230Vx16A = 11 kW and parts to 35.5 by 11, it becomes – in fact quite close to three hours.” Jock also adds that he would like to see the same technique in the 9-5, to create an environmentally gentle taxis in city traffic. Why not?

The first cars will roll out to their users over the next year and is designed to test the technology in as realistic conditions as possible during 2011-2012. All cars have a so-called black box that records all your important data:
“The program is designed to evaluate the potential of a high-performance electric car with zero emissions and is an important next step in further developing our EcoPower strategy,” said Mats Fägerhag, Head of Technical Development at Saab Automobile.
“It includes both engines in the right size and use of our expertise in turbocharging, the use of alternative fuels, including bio-ethanol by the Saab BioPower technology.”

  • Saab 9-4X 2011 News Review

We now know that Saab’s new SUV 9-4X to appear in the series clearly state on the car show in Los Angeles in November. It has been confirmed through L.A. Auto Shows offciella Twitttersajt. Production starts in December and early sales 2011th

Saab’s appearances in the wasp nest of compact and mid-sized suvar presented as a concept for nearly three years ago, the Detroit salon 2008th For obvious reasons the series became clear the car late at least a year, but now it’s about time: we have been officially confirmed that the finished suven 9-4X is on display at the motor show in Los Angeles in mid-November.

What we know about the model is that it is based on the same platform as the new generation Cadillac SRX, and that it will be built parallel to that in GM’s plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Production starts in December and likely sales will start early 2011th

We know, however, no specifications, in addition to the dimensions of the concept. The engine was a two-liter turbo-four of 300 horsepower and massive 400 Newton meters, designed to run on E85. Power was transferred via a six-speed automatic transmission to a Haldex Switchboard distributing it to all four wheels.

In the production vehicle – which in appearance are likely to be very similar concept – can we expect the U.S. market with a three-liter V6 petrol at about 265 horsepower, while Europe requires at least a couple of diesel variants. The concept car’s premiere was mentioned GM’s then-new V6 diesel of 2.9 liters, 250 horses and 550 Nm, but the Saab’s liberation from GM, it is not clear who or what that will supply diesel engines to the 9-4X. There have been rumors about BMW as a supplier, but there are no official figures showing that.

In Europe, we can also assume that a four-cylinder turbo engine designed for E85 fuel, is part of the motor program.

Our correspondent Pär Brandt in Detroit could sit 9-4X Concept at the premiere (click on link here) and reported: “The only to do a thumbs up – well accepted both front and rear. Most unexpected is probably the rear seat is so roomy until the front seat back. Laterally, it is not more spacious than what you’d expect for the type of car, but certainly has the long wheelbase contributed to the fine interior spaces. ”

The reporter also noted that the 9-4X “looked much better live than on the images just before the salon had slipped out on the web”.

All facts and pictures of the finished 9-4X, we can expect later than 17 November when the car was presented during the first press day.

LA Auto Show opens to the public on 19 November and runs until 28 November.

    Full press release:

Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, the all-new 9-5 saloon signals the dawn of a new era for the Saab brand. With progressive, confident styling and advanced technology, Saab’s distinctive new flagship will bring a fresh, alternative choice to the premium saloon segment when it goes on sale in 2010.

The clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design, and its dramatic wraparound window graphic echoes Saab’s aviation heritage. With styling inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car and a muscular, low-slung stance, the new 9-5 heralds the introduction of a bold and expressive design language.

The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-inspired head-up information display (HUD); adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; dual-zone climate control; dynamic parking assistance, and Saab XWD with eLSD: the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.

The all-turbo powertrain line-up is the broadest ever offered by Saab, carrying forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy focusing on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient four cylinder turbo engines. There is a choice of three fuels – petrol, diesel and E85 bioethanol – and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km.

“This car is the start of a new era for our brand,” says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile’s Managing Director. “We have created an advanced and very distinctive product by leveraging the power of our roots in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design, sporty driving and responsible performance. The new 9-5 delivers in all these respects, as will every future product from Saab.”

    Scandinavian Design

‘Forward-looking design that doesn’t ignore where it’s coming from’, sums up the visual appeal of the all-new Saab 9-5 saloon. “We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cues,” says Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief. “We have visual themes found in our recent concept cars, such as the Aero X, which are inspired by Scandinavian design and our brand’s aircraft heritage.”

The face of the new 9-5 is defined by a deep grille flanked with curving, ice-block headlamp units. The entire glasshouse is presented as a ‘wraparound’ mono graphic: the disguised windshield and side pillars giving the cabin Saab’s signature cockpit look. In this interplay of proportions, the windshield and roof are reminiscent of the classic 900 model.

Viewed from any angle, the all-new 9-5 cuts a strong and powerful stance. The ‘organic sculpture’ of the low-slung body blends clean, uncluttered lines with natural, curvaceous shapes. Brand design cues are evident in the ‘hockey stick’ belt-line, the strong rear C-pillars and the fuselage-smooth surfacing of the bodywork. The large Saab logo embossed in the centre of the grille characterises the assertive, self-confident design language.

The car’s dynamic character is emphasized by a falling roof-line that culminates in sweeping rear pillars that buttress a slightly recessed rear screen. Bumpers that are subtly flared to blend into the wheels convey latent energy. Below that smooth, flat rear deck, a full-width, ice-block rear light bar wraps into signature lighting.

The new 9-5’s overall proportions stretch the traditional three-box saloon silhouette, while avoiding the fastback cliché of a four-door coupé look.

    Driver-focused cabin

Inside the spacious cabin, simple forms define the architecture and echo the design purity of the exterior. Compared to its predecessor, legroom and shoulder width are increased both front and rear, with class-leading rear legroom. The choice of materials, the fit and finish and the tactile quality of the controls all reflect the new 9-5’s premium character.

The driver-focused cockpit is traditional Saab, but its execution is pioneering. The deep centre console sweeps up at a shallow angle around the driver into the main instrument display, which is topped by a neat ventilation zone. Deeply recessed main dials include a rolling ‘altimeter’ speed read-out, a reference to Saab’s aviation heritage from the Aero X concept. Driver displays, including the optional head-up display (HUD) in the windscreen, are illuminated in signature Saab green and have a crisp, floating appearance. The car’s ignition, now a start/stop button, remains between the front seats, next to the gear shift.

Infotainment choices include a top-of-the-line Harman Kardon 5.1 channel surround sound audio system and an 8-inch colour touch screen navigation system with hard disk storage for map data and 10GB for MP3 music files. A large centre console provides storage and connections for several portable devices through USB and 3.5mm AUX ports alongside a 12V power outlet.

Rear passengers can even access their own audio or watch a DVD. The rear seat entertainment unit in the back of the centre console accommodates audio controls and folding viewing screens are installed in the backs of the front seats. Wireless headphones are provided for listening and viewing.

    On the road

An array of chassis technology is focused on delivering a sporty, rewarding driving experience that belies the 9-5’s size. Saab XWD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system already available on the Saab 9-3, is offered at launch with the 2.0-litre turbo and 2.8V6 turbo engines with further applications due in the future. Available throughout the range are: adaptive chassis control, with driver settings selected through Saab DriveSense; Bi-Xenon Smart Beam adaptive headlights and adaptive cruise control. Three different suspension layouts are fitted according to engine power and all are available with a sport chassis setting.

Saab has some 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the new 9-5 further develops its rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, the four-cylinder diesel comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-litre turbo engine with CO2 emissions of just 139g/km and the 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine develops 220bhp. A top-of-the-line 2.8 V6 turbo, generating 300hp and 400Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.

Shortly after launch, a 1.6-litre petrol turbo with 180hp will be introduced, together with a 2.0-litre BioPower E85 engine. All transmissions will be six-speed.

    A new era

Defined and equipped by Saab as its top-of-the-line contender in the premium saloon segment, the all-new 9-5 is the most technically advanced car ever produced by the company. It will be built at Saab’s home plant in Trollhättan, where it has been engineered.

The all-new 9-5 makes its public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show. Combining head-turning good looks with cutting-edge driving technology, it’s the start of a new era for Saab.
