Ford Motor Company introduced the electric Ford Transit Connect in 2010 Chicago Auto Show and confirmed the zero-emission small van will be owned by fleet operators, “later in the year 2010.
2011 Ford Transit Connect electric propulsion system will use integrated electric drive Force and manufactured by Azure Dynamics special upfitter.

“Ford Transit Connect Electric is an example of how we utilize our relationships and our programs and hybrid propulsion system to bring advanced energy efficiency technologies from the laboratory into the street,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group Vice President, Global Product Development. “Not only is the ideal vehicle for eco-conscious fleet operators, is an important part of the future of Ford.”
In addition to Electric Ford Transit Connect, Ford plans to take three cars of the electricity market by 2012 – the light bulb in 2011, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in 2012 and the next generation of hybrids in 2012.

How to load and move
Ford Transit Connect appropriate power to the commercial fleet that runs predictable, short-haul routes with frequent stop-and-go driving in urban and suburban environments and central location to recharge every day. Vehicle will accelerate to a similar move with petrol Ford Transit Connect, and has a top speed of 75 mph, has an estimated range of up to 80 miles on a full charge.
Owners will have the option of charging Electric Ford Transit Connect good standard 120V outlet or, preferably, a 240V charging stations installed user base of operations for optimum recharge in six to eight hours. A portable cable that works with both types of outlets available to recharge in both types of locations.
Port of loading the vehicle on the passenger side rear wheel. The coolant onboard 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is charged by connecting the load to the outlet port. Inside the vehicle, on board the main AC DC power to change the charge.
“We are very excited about the potential of our electric vehicles,” said Praveen Cherian, Director of Program Electric Ford Transit Connect, adding that buyers electric current vehicle similar to the early adopters of hybrid vehicles. “People are a little hesitant about hybrid technology at first, but now receive and accept it. We hope that the same applies to electric vehicles.
Driving electric
When the vehicle operates, the battery provides the motor drive controls the motor through an electric propulsion system. Motor controller using driver throttle input to change the direct current supplied by the battery in the three-time signal used to drive the motor.
The onboard DC / DC converter allows the primary vehicle to charge the onboard 12V battery that powers various vehicle accessories, lights, power steering and coolant pumps.
Ford Transit Connect in the electricity, the battery has been integrated in an efficient without sacrificing passenger space and cargo room interior. The battery is expected to last the life of the vehicle.
Partnership is key
Ford Transit Connect is based on the electric business relationship between Ford and Blue Dynamics and shared their experiences with the battery supplier, Johnson Controls-Saft.
“There is interest in electric vehicles, and we are committed to bringing these vehicles to market,” said Nancy Gioia, director of Ford Global Electrification. “Working with Azure Ford and Johnson Controls-Saft to build a pure electric Ford Transit Connect will enable us to offer customers another option for the fleet to environmentally friendly transportation.”
Oak Park, Michigan, Azure Dynamics to develop hybrid technology, electric cars and electric buses and commercial trucks, such as Balance ™ Hybrid Electric, which is based on the Ford E-450 cut and strip commercial chassis service center – car segment.
“The opportunity to work with Electric Ford Transit Connect is a breakthrough for us in the blue light and commercial vehicle market,” said Scott Harrison, CEO of Azure Dynamics. “For us, this is an important evolution of our relationship with Ford at this time. From the industry perspective, we see a fleet of delivery vehicles and utility operators to move smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Dynamic Blue Force-owned unit of battery electric propulsion system will be the driving force in the Ford Transit Connect Electric. Component unit of force previously deployed in more than 40 different vehicles and has more than 25 million miles of experience on the road.
Johnson Controls-Saft has been selected by the company as a supplier Azure Dynamics cell lithium-ion batteries and batteries for the Ford Transit Connect Electric. Azure Dynamics and Ford today uses technology from Johnson Controls-Saft batteries for other products.
Ideal platform
With a unique combination of car-like driving dynamics, carrying capacity, accessibility and low purchase and operating costs, Ford Transit Connect is the ideal choice for electrification.
The Electric Ford Transit Connect is expected to offer operating costs due to lower recharge with electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline refueling. Users can also benefit from the maintenance costs are much lower during the life of the vehicle. Consider:
* The number of unique components in internal combustion engines and transmissions drastically reduced in an electric vehicle only a few moving parts in electric motor and transaxle, which translated into less pieces to make or save
* Electric motors operate with a solid state electronics, which have shown little or no maintenance over the life of the product
* Electric vehicles have the cooling system completely sealed do not require recharging, replacement or washing
* Electric vehicles do not need an oil change or tune-ups
* No belts to wear out or break and no spark plugs or injection to clean or adjust
* There is no drainage system and not to replace the liquid fuel system freeze or clog
* The use of regenerative braking to reduce brake pads
Common Power
Although there are significant differences between the Ford Transit Connect Electric and gas powered dual, there are many things the same. Both models offer:
* 135 cubic feet of cargo volume of 59.1 inches from the floor to the ceiling and peak load of 47.8-inch wheel arches
* Length 72.6 inches low loading, or more than six feet from the floor of cargo space
* Rear cargo door that opens into a 180-degree standard, or optional 255 degrees
* Lift-over height is less than two meters when the vehicle is dismantled
* Assisted rack and pinion steering allows 39-foot curb to curb turning diameter for tight maneuvering of urban space
* Bulkheads, shelves, boxes and more can be mixed upfits and configured to suit many specific business applications and needs
“With an interest in cars more environmentally friendly even harder for operators of commercial and government fleets, Ford Transit Connect Electric is committed to providing other unique solutions to their needs,” says Gerry Koss, Ford’s fleet marketing manager.
